well, the beginners sewing sessions have ended.  i feel kind of sad, but at the same time am experiencing a modicum of totally relief.  i know, a contradiction in terms.  

i think it was a success.  there were 6 people who started from absolute scratch.  had to learn sewing machine parts and how to use them.  i enjoyed watching their skills grow to the point where they each made a simple garment.

EXHIBITION OPENING AT GALLERY GACHET

it is 4:47 am, friday 25 may 2012, and tonight is the opening of the big exhibit show for the small arts grant recipients.

there will be mountains of good food, cash bar, entertainment and the company of some of the most exciting people in the downtown eastside.

wearable art not costume, using reclaimed and remants

right now is a very exciting time.  and for me, it is also a healing time.  why?


everybody in the downtown eastside (dtes) knows the heart of the city festival.  a weekend of celebration of fine and applied arts.  music, theatre, art work, workshops.


so, this year, i will be having a wearable art show at W2 cafe, in the new woodwards atrium.  there will be models, food - anglo indian food - and beautiful women, representative of the women of the dtes modelling clothing.

salish sun days - 28 may 2011

my dear friend, sandra pronteau, bead jeweller, story teller, community activist, mother, among other things asked me to be part of the salish sun festival 2011.


there was a call out for volunteers, and so i thought to workshop a "making something quick and easy using textile scraps" and came up with small pouches.  

you will not see the faces of people in any workshop by me; this is as a courtesy so they retain their privacy.

the pouches were small, no larger than 3 or 4 inches, and as is usual with chindi design projects, the fabrics were scraps.

The first person to confirm or correct this will get a handmade canvas lunch bag from me.  The only catch is you need to be living in the Greater Vancouver Regional District.  What a mouthful.

I think that the way that I will organize this blog is to have a "Gallery", where all my work will be displayed in categories, like "Bags & Pochettes", "Soft Jewelery", "Wall Hangings", etc.  Then there will be a brief description of materials, methods and tools used, as well as how I got the materials, (donation, free box, remnant bin at DressSew).
